Reduced Diameter Mast
The 5 Oceans Rocket stick has been designed and tested for hardcore use. When you are charging into a mast high, top to bottom breaking wave, you need to be able to count on your gear, so we beefed up the masts to take the punishment. For the bend curve we opted for a slightly flex top biased constant curve with a 64%/78% bend character. When we developed our mast bend we wanted to keep it as normal as possible, not off on a tangent either stiff or flex topped, in this way our sails would be tolerant of use with other mast bends, but perfect on our masts, and equally the Rocket sticks are compatible with the widest possible range of luff curves and sails.
We manufacture the Rocket Stick using a roll/wrapping process whereby prepreg carbon fibre is placed on a mandrel exactly as required and then pressure wrapped to cure. The layup has been specified to give our exact bend curve and strength requirements. The boom area, tip and base all have a Kevlar wrap for extra strength and the ferrule is of very close tolerance fit. The fit of the ferrule is integral to the joints integrity, a tight fit makes for a much stronger mast in service.
